Cameroon's Plight

I cannot be more appreciative of the time I spent in Cameroon. I feel like I really know my country right now. You see, I left the country when I just turned seventeen, still a child protected by her parents and very ignorant. Close to six years later, by the special Grace of God, I returned as an adult. One very curious as to why we Africans, even as intelligent as we are, are still bound by the chains of poverty and misery.

Yes, there is definitely a high level of suffering and poverty in Cameroon. It is everywhere; just walking the streets will give you a clear picture of how people are struggling to make ends meet. The guy I used to buy my morning beignets from is actually a degree holder and so are several of the taxi drivers on the road. The question you will ask yourself is why a country so rich is a victim of such pitiable conditions. There are many reasons. The one I primarily advocate is the lack of proper education, thus the failure to foster the right mentality. Below are three other major reasons contributing to our poor growth.

Cameroonians are lazy. Everyone wants to be employed by the government and that is not possible! Most Cameroonians do not want to fold up their sleeves and do their own thing. It is not because they lack the intelligence and means, they just want the convenience of getting an easy paycheck at the end of every month.
Cameroonians have been enslaved by alcohol. Brasseries du Cameroun is a thorn in our flesh. It is only in Cameroon that you will find 10 bars on a single stretch and all of them are making good profit. Drinking “shacking” has become a part of our culture, to our very own detriment. Not only is this excessive drinking a waste of finances, it is a waste of time and talent.

Cameroonians are “church goers”. The problem Cameroon has is not only a physical one, but also spiritual. It is well known that prominent members of the government are deeply involved in occultism. This automatically stifles any form of opposition. One cannot chose to battle dangerous dark forces if one is not properly equipped with a higher power. A dark power controls our country and we need serious Christians to overcome this power. We need to fast and pray seriously for our country, day and night. However, Cameroon is a predominantly orthodox country. Look at the huge numbers that flock to Catholic and Presbyterian churches every Sunday and compare that to the relatively scanty Pentecostal churches. Whether we choose to admit it or not, the truth is that more than 80% of orthodox church members are not spiritually strong. They lack proper knowledge of God’s Word and prayer warrior skills. Without these how can you battle strong evil occultist forces like those that hunt our country?

Elections are coming up and we can only hope for a miracle if we want the next seven years to be different. Instead of giving up and doing nothing, let us go out and vote. You never know what God’s plan is. ELECAM might actually pull off a fair election. Therefore I am calling on all Cameroonians, especially the youth, to do what they can to vote and encourage others to do same in the upcoming elections. I also encourage us to pray more for our country and to do what we can to make a difference.
