I have dabbled in fiction for a while now, actually since I was a little kid reading Enid Blyton's "The Famous Five." It is about time I share some on here. After giving it some thought, I decided these fiction posts will fall under two categories:
- Short stories that highlight common struggles in society.
- Twelve(12) chapter story Series
I look forward to sharing these stories with you. So I'll go right ahead and launch this new phase of my blogging experience with a short story I submitted last year for the Etisalat Flash Fiction Competition.
TIPPED OVER
His second slap sent her to the floor crashing.
Palms against the cold bedroom tiles, she tried to ignore her stinging cheeks as she watched the tiny splashes teardrops made beneath her face.
“Look at me!” He barked. When she did not obey, he yelled.
Eighteen month old Bessem stirred in her crib. Anjema gradually lifted her tear streaked face to meet his stony gaze. Her tears did not soften him like they used to.
“How many times have I told you not to ask me stupid questions? Eh?!” When she did not answer he hissed and walked away, mumbling under his breath.
Anjema Orokor remained on the floor. The pain on her body only a shadow of what she felt in her heart. Her eyes followed the man she once loved as he stood in front of the wardrobe, unbuttoning his uniform. A military man. Her knight in shining armor, her husband and now, her oppressor. She blamed the promotion. A curse disguised as a blessing. An increase in rank that came with more beers on his table, and more women in his bed.
Kwoge collapsed on the bed and went right to sleep, indifferent to the fact that she still sat on the floor, misery etched all over her. Suddenly the indiscretions, disrespect and negligence flooded her mind. Pain became anger, searing and fiery, it burned its way to every inch of her being until she was numb. She felt nothing. Reason had taken its leave and conscience was on a break.
It had been 3 years since she first woke up with a black eye.
The almost empty whisky bottle he staggered in with earlier lay on the dresser, next to the holster that held his weapon.
She reached for the pistol.
