As far as I know, there is really nothing special about President-elect Biden. I personally think he was a poor choice of candidate for the Democrat Party. They could have done better, especially facing Trump. Still I desperately hoped he will win so that maybe, just maybe, many Christian "Trumpers" will be shocked into reality.
Shocked into the reality that this world is headed in one direction, and if you read your Bible, you will know what direction it is. No matter how much we try to slow it down...it is only going to get worse. More sinful, more rebellious and more perverse. But a lot of us Christians seem to be in denial, trying to turn back the hands of time, or hold on to the past glories of a godly nation.
Remember when Peter tried to stand in the way of the cross and Christ rebuked him? Called him Satan? (Matthew 16:21-23) Yes indeed, what may seem horrific or out of place to us, may actually be God's perfect will.
A few months back I wrote about why, if I was an American, I will not vote. The Bible commands us to fulfill our civic responsibility, but not at the expense of disobeying God. And endorsing either party for me equals compromising on several key Christian values. Let the world handle worldly matters, my citizenship is in Heaven. I should rather actively be in the business of winning souls for that Kingdom.
It is eerie how much Christian Trump supporters remind me of the Pharisees…most of whom think themselves a better Christian than those who voted Biden. Honestly, the Christian Republican rhetoric makes me wonder if they are really interested in the salvation of souls, or just want to tell people what to do.
Pro-life? Does life cease to have value after birth? Because I do not see these guys fight with the same energy and intensity for gun control or police reform or even better treatment of children at the Mexican border. I bet you a very small percentage of them are actively engaged in reaching out to women who seek out the services of abortion clinics.
What about pride, self-preservation and divisiveness? America has never been more polarized. Are these guys going to deny that the current presidency could have better handled the issues causing this polarization?
Dear Christian "Trumper", in voting Trump you have simply chosen the sin you are more comfortable with. The quiet sins of pride, discord and selfishness. When it comes to immigration shouldn't you stand on the side of generosity? Open your borders and share with the less fortunate, even if it costs you? And to think this prosperity you so selfishly guard, comes at a price many other nations have to pay. If that was not the case Trump would not have threatened Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda when they tried to ban second-hand clothing from the USA, to give local clothes-makers a chance. Ironic given what he says about China.
If you think the Republican party will make America more godly, think again. Putting laws in place that ban gay marriage and abortion will not stop people from being gay or committing abortion. It will not make the nation more godly. So for me, that is not the Christian solution. Did the law ever save a soul? No. Love alone does. The book of Romans beautifully reveals that.
It does not matter who is president, it matters whom you showed love to today. Whatever laws are in place, without Christ, men will still sin and revel in their sin. So instead consider reaching across party lines. Consider reaching out to those you call sinners. Be the bigger person and fight for peace. Be an example of love and compassion, forgiveness and tolerance. When spanked on one cheek, turn the other. Then maybe some of the gay and pro-choice Dems may see Christ in you, and genuinely consider turning away from their sin.
